West Texas herpers. Ive got a couple ?s

cowtownherper Apr 18, 2005 03:38 PM

First off I dont frequent this forum often because to be honest I dont own any King snakes. I was directed here from the field notes and obsevation forum because of all of the West Texas boys that hang out here. I live in Ft Worth and am planning a little herping trip to the Big Bend area this June. I would like to set up a base at a motel in the area and spend about five days cruising the local roads. Anyone with any info on where to stay, and where to cruise would be greatly appreciated.

Both Longhorn Ranch and The Wildhorse are good places to stay on Hwy. 118 and are about 10 - 15 miles north of the west entrance to the park. Check out the Alterna Page and Herping the Trans-Pecos under the Care Sheets/FAQ's/Features section here for alot of info on where to hunt.

Plans are for Presidio and Brewster county.

I go "seat of the pants" with no advanced reservations. Stayed at the easter egg last time I was down. Not fancy, but priced right for a cool place to sleep off the heat of the day.

Do you have your travel date set yet?

The Herping the Trans Pecos is a gold mine if you have never been out West, read up on it. Let us know if you need anything.

Good Luck.

I use to stay at all of those " other " places till I tried the Wildhorse about 9 years ago. I WILL never stay at any other place as a lot of others now. Louise is really friendly and probably could use the business since Bob passed away this year. As you all probably know, you couldn't ask for a better tranquil place sitting in the Xmas ( actually the Wildhorse mountains ) mountains range. No pool but how many of herpers takes to water ? LOL ! All cabins have kitchenettes and comes supplied with dishes, cooking pans/pots, utensils, microwave , etc. Also all have nice porches with chairs, tables, picnic tables on some and BBQ grills out side. The average price is comparison with the Longhorn and Easter Egg and they offer a herper special on the price. 1 to 3 bedrooms ( yes, BEDROOMS )with doors. The lobby place sells ice, sodas < Beer > ? , souvenirs, etc.

Thank you for the info. It really helps and has me ready to go right now. We'll probably head that way on june 20th. I am really looking foward to it. Any of you guys ever run in to any trouble on late night cruises in that area? Thanks again.

Yes, lots... but that was a long time ago and times have changed a bit. This year I hope they will be for the better based on the email that Troy shared with us all.

However, I am never sure where I will be until I get there...

I think we did the "other place" last time because some people we knew were checked in already and they had cable.
