Bunch of rabbit breeding questions for anyone breeding rabbits....

What kind are you breeding?
How often do they have a litter, and what size is an average litter?
What size cages do you use?
Particular brand/supplier of cage?

I just started breeding them so I don't have most of the info. I have Jersey woolies. I use cages from Martins cages. They are the stackable hutches. I think they are the 30x24x14. They have plenty of room to romp. I house them one to a cage. I will be getting into the mini varieties more because that is what the pet stores want.

Thanks for that info. I'll look into those Martins cages.

I'll probably pick up a book on rabbit varieties to try to get some general info about them. Thanks again.

Another good meat rabbit is the californias , there white tipped with some black. Rabbit meat growers use this type most cause there hardy and have alot of meat on them , thats what there designed for. They will get pretty big but for snake food you put them down when there at the size you need and you can sell excess to petstores when there babies , thats better anyways. As far as dwarfs for pets netherland dwarves are great 2 to 3 pound adults with character. Getting a book would be good cause breeding rabits is not like breeding rats lol. hope this helps Paul

Hi...

I breed three types, New Zealand Whites, Californa's, and Florida Whites. The first two are consider large breeds and the last is a small to a medium breed. All three get to 5-6lbs in 12 weeks but the Florida White stop there and the others keep gaining.

Does can have a litter almost every month but that will burn her out fast. A good healthy female can have as many as 14 kits per litter but we like to see 8 to 10. With our rabbit production we need to see 49 kits per doe per year or we are wasiting feed and money on her. That's a good number 7 litters per year with 7 kits living to grow out.

All of our rabbits are kepted in 36" x 24" x 18" wire cages that we make ourself. We hange them from the barn roof with wire and the watering system comes through the front along with feed hutches.

We produce about 500 to 800 meat rabbits per week so this a good system. Another good place for info on rabbits is www.californianrabbits.com/readingroom.htm

Hope this helps.
James

Your best breed would be New Zealand Whites. Plain REW(Ruby eyed white) rabbits, 4 1/2 pounds in 10 weeks. Why keep them 12 weeks? I've bred commercially for many years, and for a hobby many before that. Currently produce 7,000 a month.
