Update... just got back from the vet...

nategodin Jul 10, 2003 05:13 PM

Well, I just got back from the vet, who couldn't really do much but look Columbia (my sinaloan milk) over and take an x-ray. The good news is, she appears to be healthy. Her respiratory system is clear, no signs of impaction in her digestive tract. Unfortunately, I still don't have a good answer to why she won't eat. The only other symptoms she's showing are restlessness and a slight greenish discoloration of her urates. The vet thought it could be some kind of kidney/liver problem, but he didn't have any diagnostic tools/procedures to confirm that. He didn't have a set of probes, either, which I found kind of surprising... Columbia was sold to me as a female, but if she were a male, that could explain a lot too. From what I understand, it's not uncommon for male snakes to go off feed and act restless around this time of year, and the discolored urates could be caused by sperm discharges. It's also possible that she's stressed out by the rattling of the old metal fan in the window near her cage. I'm going to try to find a quieter spot for her cage and see if that helps. I can't think of anything else to do at this point... ideas/opinions are certainly welcome!

Thanks,
Nate

Well, that's some good news anyway. I'd just keep offering food every few days until she eats. Moving the cage to a "quieter" area isn't a bad idea from a perspective of reducing traffic around her cage, as well as making sure she has hiding options in the cage. The rattling of the fan isn't an issue because she really can't hear that anyway (no ears, you know?) She can sense vibrations, but I sincerely doubt that fan is disturbing her.
