too big of a cage?

happymidgetpaul Apr 18, 2005 08:52 PM

i recently had to give my monitor lizard to a reptile store (he wouldn't stop injuring himself on the branches and walls of his cage when he got scared, which was all the time due to my little brother running around the house and barging into my room) and i traded my monitor for a tegu, he is only about 11 inches and is eating crickets and fruits, lol, i really dont see to much of a problem with keeping him in my 85 gallon tank, but the people at the place that i got him from say he will have a hard time finding heat, water, and food, is this true? lol

You did not mention how big your tegu was but as an adult it will need at least a 4'X4' cage, an 85 gallon will not be big enough (unless it is a gold tegu, smaller). With my blue I started with a 20gal as a hatchling and in a month had to move to a 4'X 2' and then to a 4'X 8' and the to a 8'X 8' now that he is over 4' long. Best of luck! I hope this fairs better than the monitor?
