Ball Pythons Interacting With Other Breeds...?

DominaEve Apr 19, 2005 12:07 PM

I have a Ball Python that is farely young. Not sure of his age when I bought him, but I think he's around 8-10 months old now. I also have a Brazilian Rainbow boa that is 3 years old.

My question comes about because I want to be able to have them out at the same time and handle them together. I have had a couple people tell me that Balls are particularly unfriendly toward other snakes, especially boas. This sounded a little strange to me, so I thought I would ask those here with more experience with Balls.

Do you think it's safe to handle them together? My Ball is still pretty small, and that is the only thing that concerns me a little. If for some reason my boa decided to be agressive, I don't know if I could save the little guy ... and I really don't want that.

Both of them are very docile and sweet snakes. I have never seen any agression from either, but I guess this doesn't mean it can't happen if different breeds don't interact well. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Do yourself and your animals a favor and keep them separate.

I dont think anyone on this forum will reccomend putting two species together. First of all I dont think that the husbandry of the two are compatible but I may be wrong. Another thing is the possibility of IBD. Boas do not show symptoms as severly of pythons do any animal infected with IBD will die but in pythons it happens quicker. It is just a headache you dont need. Hope this helps. Have a good day.

Hmm, it's possible I miscommunicated ... I do not want to house them together. I just want to know if it is safe to take them out and handle them at the same time.

Your comments were informative, though. Thanks.

As long as you are quite certain each of the snakes is 100% healthy a minimal amount of contact should be fine. Boas and Pythons carry different bacterias that may harm the other so you don't want to over expose them to that and the IBD has already been pointed out. I'm not a boa person and don't really know much about them, but some snakes will eat other smaller snakes, check to make sure your species is not one that will consider your little guy a snack. I personally wouldn't do it, but if you are going to do it, know what you are working with first.

Thanks for the feedback I received a lot of good info to work with. I guess sometimes even with the best of intentions some things just shouldn't be attempted. I am glad I asked first.

Sincerely ...

You might have better luck with an answer to this in the rosey, rubber, sand boa forum. Personally I don't think you'll have a problem with them unless you put the two of them in one or the others tank, then it's possible but not probable, you may have some territorial aggressiveness. Most likely they will seek out seperate corners. The risk of passing disease or parasites to one another is an issue of concern though.Take care and enjoy, but be concious of the situations involved.
