Corn or King?

ThaDragonSlayer Apr 19, 2005 02:54 PM

I'm fairly new to snakes ( but not to herps in general ) & I was hoping someone on this board could help me. How can tell the difference between a baby snake. I'm not sure if it's a cornsnake or a kingsnake. It's VERY agressive ( unlike my adult corn which I raised from a hatchling) & it doesn't have any of the characteristics of a corn ( with the exception of its color). I don't have any pictures of it to post up yet. Is there any physical traits or behavior that I should look for to help me figure out what the little guy is?

Offhand, it's really impossible without a photo.
It could be neither. If it's that aggressive, it could be a water snake.

If you can't get a photo up, I would suggest that you
let us know where the snake was caught.

We can then give you a few options of what it might be, and you can look for photos on this site and other websites that are close to your snake. It won't be hard to find photos of juvenile snakes that are native to your area...we just need to know where it was caught. That's of course assuming it WAS caught and not bought.

More info?
Thanks

I agree that it is probably neither. One other option is that it is a young black racer. They are blotched much like corns. A photo or detailed description of color & markings, both dorsal & ventral along with locality would go a long way toward getting this figured out.

to one of several hundred species of snake from your description.

Where did you get it?

Have you looked at a field guide or searched the web?

Otherwise, we won't be able to help you.

Sorry.

Ok..First; what is it about it's color or pattern that makes you tink it is a corn snake. Does it have distinct saddleds or bandss or small spots?

Second; Here is a couple of things to look at that can tell us more about it (if you can't get a picture).

Are the scales smooth, or do does each scale have a line going down the middle (keeled)?

Look at the belly. Is there a clear separation between belly and the top (so it looks like a circle cut in half) or is the body rounded all the way around?

Is the head long or does it look short (blunt)?
