Let's talk about Maternal and Incubator based incubation.

Philly_nr Apr 19, 2005 02:54 PM

I hear stories of some people who allow their snakes to maternally incubate and others who use an incubator. I've heard great stories from both sides of the fence and I'd like to hear debates from both sides as well.

I think that many people use an incubator over maternal incubation based solely on what they've read or videos they've seen. Most of their reasoning is pure rhetoric based on what the "big breeders" tell them to do.

Let's get the debate going!

thanks

It's all about control! I have to have control of everything! Put down that remote and listen! No, I'm not that bad. I incubate my eggs to gain more control - control over temps primarily. My snake room does fluctuate some but I can maintain an incubator to within a couple of degrees. Can that be accomplished maternally? Probably. I've been toying with going maternal. I may do it with one clutch this year just to see what happens.

The main reason for chosing to incubate for me was to get the female back on feed as soon as possible. If you let her incubate he eggs, she is not eating for another 55-60 days. When my female laid her clutch this year, I washed her and the tub down, and she was eating the next day. You can't do that when they are maternally incubating the eggs. Hence you lose time to get her back to weight for next year. That was a very easy choice for me.

If your going to listen to someone, don't you think you should listen to a "Big Breeder"? A smart little breeder would. Lol. Those Fire eggs I posted were pulled as soon as I saw them and placed in an incubator. I want that female as fat as possible for her next stud.
