WKMG (Orlando, Florida) 19 April 05 Suburban Gator Hides Under Car, Bites Wildlife Officer
Pompano Beach, Fla.: A Florida Fish and Wildlife officer trying to pull a 7-foot gator out from under a car ended up on the wrong side of the wayward reptile Monday.
The snapping alligator bit Officer Hank Jutunen on both hands, according to wildlife officials. He didn't need stitches but did get antibiotics because the risk of infection from alligator bites is severe.
Apparently the alligator crawled out of a canal and hid under a car on Northwest 31st Avenue in Pompano Beach. While struggling with the animal, it clamped down on his hands.
Fabian Trejo was driving by and saw Juntunen and other officers having trouble with the gator. Trejo sat on the alligator until someone came to take it away. Another team of wildlife officers eventually caught the grumpy gator.
More than a year ago in Fort Myers a professional landscaper who was mauled by an alligator died in surgery to treat an infection caused by the animal's vicious bites.
