keeping a group of gecks

alex P Apr 19, 2005 06:35 PM

so i have a 3 year old male, Rito, and i'm thinking of getting him some company to observe some new behaviors. a few questions though: is a 20 gallon tank sufficient? for how many? also, how big of a problem will breeding be? i don't really have anywhere to keep additions to the family. if dealing with pregnant females is not too complicated/expensive an issue, does anyone have any experience with selling/giving away babies? how often will a female be getting pregnant, and how many offspring will i have to deal with? are pet stores receptive to taking babies? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks,
alex

You can keep two leopards in a 20 gal. It's generally 10 gallons per lizard. As to company for your guy, i would say if you don't want to breed, don't. Leopard geckos can be rather prolific and if you don't have the time, money or means to get rid of them don't get a female. Male leopard geckos don't live together either. In all honesty you male is not lonely, keeping leopards together can add stress to them, esspecially if it's breeding pair that are always together. (you would have to separate the male and female at times, so the female can have a break from breeding)
If you still want to breed, talk to your local pet stores and see if they would take your babies. In most cases they will, but don't take is as a sure thing.

just a follow up....is breeding seasonal? couldnt i theoretically just separate them if there is a set breeding pattern? it's something i would be willing to try if possible. also, IF i decide to make the call, does anyone know of a good place to get a nice, healthy adult female, preferably a morph of some kind, for a reasonable price? and still waiting on the how often/how many offspring question. if it's a slow enough process, i might even want to try breeding for awhile. its just that i dont want to be inundated with like15 leos all at once. anyway, thanks everyone

If kept together all the time, they can breed pretty much at any time. The breeding season is generally between January and September.

They will lay a clutch of 2 eggs roughly once a month for several months. Top producers will lay 10 or more clutches, I would guess that normal is somewhere around 6 - 8 clutches. This will happen with only one mating, becuase the females can store sperm.
