NJ Herping....

pythonman26 Apr 19, 2005 08:27 PM

Within the next month or two I will be heading over to Jersey to find some herps. Where are some of the best areas to go. I went 2 yrs ago to the Pine Barrens and only came away with pictures of a Black Racer, Eastern Box Turtle as well as a Spotted turtle.

I would like to find and photograph Eastern Kings, Coastal Plains Milks, Black Rats, Timbers, Coppers and if possible a NJ PIne.
Anyone know of the best locales to find each?

Thank You,

Drew

I live in south jersey, and all I ever see in the pine barrens are box turtles, painted turtles, red bellies, racers, and toads. Your lucky you found a spotter. Timbers are rare in the pines and protected. There is a small population in Marlton, NJ, but it is in the middle of the suburbs not really the best place to herp. Good luck finding anything in New Jersey besides shopping centers and developments.

I remember reading an article in Reptiles Magazine where the guy found 4 Eastern Kings around the Pine Barrens and all types of other snakes. I also hear in Ocean Co. there is a population of Coastal Plains Milksnakes?

This is a fact.

It was only 2 kings... 5 Pine Snakes... 12 or 15 timbers... 5 boxies... 2 spotteds... one musk... one painted (nesting) and then some, in one and a half days in an August. It was a herping trip dreams are made of. I believe it was in Ocean county also.

It was also a poorly written article. It could have been done better.
