feeding question

raisnok Apr 19, 2005 09:55 PM

the last time my corn snake has eaten was march 29. i waited 10 days, he still refused..........10 days after that he refused again..........5 days....nothing...... 3 days ago i tried the decapitated pinkie, nothing...........
now my question is, should i feed the snake at night? i noticed tonight the snake is active, so i am going to try........ do corns eat at night or during the day? or just when the mood strikes them?

How old is your snake? Was it eating before? My corns will eat whenever food is given but nighttime is when they would be out in the wild. Have you tried leaving a live pinkie in a deli cup with the snake overnight? Let us know the history of the snake and youll get better info. Good luck

i got the snake march 5, it was eating i pinkie once a week, then went to 2 small pinkie a week..... march 29 it ate one large pickie..........after that i have tried one small pinkie, a large, 2 small..........nothing.
i put the snake in a deli cup with a small pinkie.... nothing.
even tried putting the snake in a deli cup with a decapitated pinkie..... still nothing.
the snake is about 16 to 18 inches long, it is a miami phase.

What is your setup like? Substrate, hides, temps, location, size of cage, how often do you handle it? I would suggest putting the snake in a low traffic area and leave it completely alone for a week. Then try leaving a live pinkie with it overnight. Let us know.

Is it going to the bathroom regularly as well?

yes he is going to the bathroom regularly.
the set up is a 20 long, with aspen as the bedding, the hot side reaches 86 to 88 degrees, the cool side around 78 he has 2 half logs for hides, one in the cooler area, and one in the hot side.
he also has a branch to climb, if he wants to "bask", the tank is heated with a uth. his water dish is on the cooler side and it is one he can fit into.

hhmmmm sounds pretty good. Maybe knock the heat down about 4-5 degrees and see if that helps. Again, let him be for a week and try again. Good luck.

have you tried a smaller enclosure. babies don't like a big area. i have a baby in a 10 gallon tank. i started her in a 5 gallon tank with a simple human heat pad under 1/4 of the tank. i'm going to keep her in the 10 till she is some bigger and eating fuzzies good.
also they like hiding places they can feel the sides of. mine likes a paper towel roll or even under the paper towel so no one can see her.
could be yours is just stressed being in a 20 gallon tank to soon. if you decide to try a 5 or 10 gallon tank then let it be for a few days before trying to feed again. also was shedding mentioned? some snakes won't eat if they are going to shed.
just my 2 cents worth.

raisnok Apr 20, 2005 05:40 PM

i have not noticed him to shed, i havent found any shed skin in the tank.
i think i will try the 10 gallon tank.

>>You were asked if you left the snake with a pinkie in a deli dish over night.
You seemed to avoid the question so I would be willing to bet that with this and your question about feeding at night the answer is no.
Take a live pinkie and place it in a deli cup with your snake. Place the deli cup in the tank (not the hot side), turn off the lights and leave it over night.
Try this and let us know what happens.
