Need Help

toiletoctopus Apr 19, 2005 10:05 PM

Hi Everyone,

I was walking by a creek in Northern Virginia yesterday during the nice weather, and noticed a snake. I wish I could have got a picture, because I'm curious to what type it was. I saw it in the water, and after it saw me it took off underneath. It was dark brown, and really thick. I first thought it was an escaped python. However it was only about 2 or 3 feet long, and had one lighter colored circle on its neck. Any help would be greatly appreciated..I'm not sure if this is enough info.

Northern red belly snake,Storeria occipitomaculata is a common northern Virginian snake that has a red belly and a banded neck. Three feet is unlikely, but this snake does frequent creeks as its favorite food is crayfish.
