High Desert HL

I just noticed somewhere that phrynosoma living at high altitude may not eat harvester ants. I live in Santa Fe, NM (above 7000 ft) and I think the ones around here are P. hernandesi.

Are they likely to eat ants? If not, what do they eat?

(FYI I don't have any captive and i'm not rushing out to nab one, just wondering. )

thanks, e

You are probably right about the species. They do still eat ants but fewer than other species by a considerable degree and most likely of a different type.
This species is more difficult in captivity so I would recommend you really give it some thought. You would probably be better off with a solare or DHL if you decide to embark on captive husbandry.
Cheers!
Cable.
