Things are getting busy (the monsters are too)...

mark seward Apr 20, 2005 06:35 AM

Things are starting to hop. Both the males and the females are developing nicely. The attached photo is of one of the females.

So far, three females have mated (I haven't checked last nights video yet). The first female to go has mated 4 different nights (some nights mutliple times). Copulations are lasting around 2.5 hrs and are starting between midnight and around 4 am.

There are more males and females that should start copulations soon based on follicle and testis size. So far, so good.

Good for you Mark! I tried the US on my beadeds this year and while my vet was not 100% positive, or myself, it looked like I had one sexed pair at least. The others are still pretty young, 18 months or so and I didnt even bother with them.
Are ALL copulations taking place in the early hours? I wonder if its an artifact of captivity or something, or if thats the SOP for wild Gilas too.
Cheers
Brett

Dr. Seward are you or other breeders responding to the proposed laws against keeping Gila's in states like North Carolina? I've posted email addresses for people to respond to N.C. Senate Bill 1032 and there seems to be a lack of concern in this community. People seem more interested in posting their photos rather than their political positions in this forum. We could all lose if some of these bills can't be stopped. This just seems to be a copy of a bill from another state and my guess will continue to spread like an unwanted rash.

I sent my email in regarding this proposal. It can and will affect ALL of us at some point. If states start banning venomous everywhere there will be no market for breeding them as there will be no clientele. The madness will continue Im sure...
