Happy Birthday - Present: Flying snake eggs

FRAN Apr 20, 2005 09:40 AM

Well, it happened to be my birthday today and this morning I went into the snake room and found my flying snake sitting with these eggs. She went off feed two months ago and I figured something was going on although I did not see them breed. Well, I am sure that no other present will make my day, although I am sure whatever I get from my wife and kids will get a similiar smile as to when I found these eggs.

Congrats on the flying snake eggs. I hope they all hatch out and do well for you! Post more photos if you can!

I didn't realize flying snakes were so pretty!

There are actually several species of flying snake (Chrysopelea) including a red species, "pelis", which is also very attractive but rarely available on the market. I owned two of them and they remained a smaller species which ate lizards whereas the ornata (picture) will take rodents.

I once saw a show about the ornata and how they glide and they can glide 40 feet in any direction they wish for every 100 feet they jump from, and they can change the direction in which they wish to glide. Some guy built a high ramp and permitted them to jump and they filmed them and analyzed their movement as they glided. They actually "snake" their way in the direction they wish to go utilizing the force of air against their bellies as they fall. And they do not use this just to escape from animals chasing them. Where they live there are also gliding lizards and they use their gliding ability to chase their prey.

That's awesome!

It'll be a year or so before I get my zoo permit, but are flying snakes hard to find on the market? You're the only one I've ever heard of keeping them, and until now I have never considered them.

They are imported every spring/summer and you have to keep in touch with the major importers to hound them for them if you do not see them on their lists. If I see any I will let you know.
