Rodent drippers?

melisondra Apr 20, 2005 03:28 PM

Ive seen lele and others talk about using the rodent drinking bottles for water. I was just curious if anyone had experience getting or training chameleons to drink from these permanently?
Id like to give my guys constant access to water but I cant let my drippers run 24-7 cause I have them dripping into plants, which get flooded pretty easily.

Anyway is it possible do you think to train them to use these? I know It would have to be kept clean so bacteria and such would grow, but just curious! Thanks all!

p.s Hope everything is going alright with Luna lele! Were cheerin for her!

hey, how is your rescue doing??? I have been wrapped up with Luna but still thinking of you

I cannot remember who it was that squeezed and bent the tip so that the water just dripped slowly around the ball and the cham's tongue would trigger it to release more. I tried it (need to be careful of sharp edges - I can explain more if you want) but the dripper was not at a good angle. I also tried without bending the tip, as some folks said the shiny ball would attract them and I thought she was going to get it - but alas, even my brilliant Luna didn't get it -lol! Now I just hold it and hand water.

Can you move the dripper to drip into a container? I have mine in a corner above a pothos so it hits the leaves but then it drips into some catch basins. Takes some time to get it right - like one the cham sticks his head under it the drops bounce in all directions and you come home to wet floors! (lol!) so try it on a weekend or when you are home. I actually have 3 different tubs to catch and it works really well. So when I am not home (really, I am not here 24/7 even tho' it probably seems it!) I don't have to worry. You can sort of see it in this photo on the left (laying tub is on right behind plant)I stick rolled up towels on the side to catch any bouncy drips! I usually have a big croton in front of the tubs, but her laying tub calls for redecorating - something I am getting used to!

Hey lele
The rescue is doing well, mom's already trying to call her something like Jaws or Xena (aka the warrior princess cause apparently her preferred way of exiting her cage is by hanging from my moms hand by her teeth)
Ill try picking up one of the bottles and seeing if they will pick up on that. Who knows! I can try putting containers to catch the water but I have a ton of foliage that throws the water everywhere. Oh well! Back to the drawing board!

Hope everythings going well with Luna! She's got the best person ever to care for her so im sure everything will work out!

Hi,

It was me that has the rodent waterer for my cham. In fact, I just got a new one and didn't bend the end and I've seen Clide drink from it several times. I think the trick is to start off with one that's bent/damaged so the water drips out and the cham can see it on the end. It doesn't take much to bend just give the metal tube a squeeze so the little ball doesn't fit flush in the end.

One thing I discovered is that I can't move it to a different spot. I tried that once and it totally messed him up; he didn't drink/couldn't figure out where the water went (luckily I spray him a lot anyway so he was okay).

I like that I don't have to worry about him getting enough water and I can also tell how much he's drinking by the water level. I clean the container regularly and bleach it every so often so it ensures that he's getting clean water as well. Sometimes when I spray him I wonder about him drinking water that's dripping down from the leaves through a turd or two that I may have missed picking up, yuck!.

If you have any other questions just let me know.

Btw, Lele, I'm rooting for Luna too. I hope everything goes okay. This certainly isn't a result of poor care, you're one of the most conscientious owners here.
