Help for my firebelly toad

Pugwinkle Apr 20, 2005 03:53 PM

I have three firebelly toads that I have had for about a year now. I noticed the other day that one of the toads muzzle, if you will, was not the proper color of green and black. It is rather a clear color and I've posted on several amphibian and fish forums but haven't gotten a lot of help.

Some think it may be a fungus, others think it may be bacterial. I've been using a mixture of 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 water and dabbing it with a q-tip a couple of times a day but it doesn't seem to have helped a lot.

I was told to call my local fish store and ask them a question but I don't have a lot of confidence in them up here so I thought I would try running it by you first and see if you had any advice for me.

This is the question that I was told to ask my local fish store

"Call your LFS and ask about a mild wide spectrum antibiotic (one that will work for both gram positive and gram negative infections). Use a half-dose of whatever they recommend."

I have quarantined the little guy by the way.

I think the advice of using the antibacterial is the best course of action. Contact a vet, and using half dosage at first is most likely the best way to go. I wish I could help more, but I don't have much knowledge of infections. Hope it helps.
