Silkworm Question

stcloudbadger Apr 20, 2005 05:28 PM

I just received 50 small silkies today along with 250 eggs. A couple of questions for the experts 9 (lele). I offered our little guy a silky and it took some coaxing but he finely ate one after being hand fed. He didn't seem interested in anymore so I offered him his usual crickets and he ate them all up. Is there a trick to getting your beardie to go after the silkies? Also, do you still have to be careful of the size of the silkie, no larger than the space between his eyes? Thanks again!

Some bearded dragons take a bit to recognizing silkworms as food. As silkworms are soft bodied, you can feed larger than the space between the dragons eyes. I would recommend not going more than twice the size of the space.

Holding the silkworm by the head will cause it to wave around the rest of it's body while it tries to escape or get it's little pseudo feet onto something solid. This may be enough motion for your dragon to strike. Hopefully once he gets used to the taste of the silkworms, he will eat them when just dropped into the cage.

Because I am partial to all Leps I cannot hold one by its head - lol! But what I do (for Luna - cham)is to place it right on a branch for her to shoot at or I take a wood skewer and pick it up by its silk. I just place the the tip in the proximity of the silkie and twist - you can ALWAYS find silk with these guys!

I have tiny (about 1 week old - maybe 1/4" ones right now that I am growing for bd boy and decided to get him used to them now (in light of your thread!) so I did the skewer technique and held it in front of him and he went right for it - and then 4 more! Of course these are rather small but he certainly likes them!
