new dragon owner

dragonvet Apr 20, 2005 05:57 PM

hello i just wanted to announce, i now have a new fiesty female bearded dragon. she is awsome, i have been wanting one for a long time. i just got her a few hours ago. well i do have a few questions.the pet store owner said she was a sandfire. he does not now exactly how old she is but he said she is probably around 2-3 months. her tail is pretty long and all toes didgits look ok,no visible wounds or tears she looks healty. she is about 8-9 inches from tip to tip. and she is eating her first mealworms and crickets right now.any way how old could she be, i thought id ask the experts. also as far as lighting goes i have under tank heating mats and a 100 watt yellow bulb, also a 100watt red knight bulb i could use at knight.or would it be better if i just used no bulbs at knight? i was told not to use uth,but i thought thats what they nedded for helping to digest their food? what is the meaning of uvb and the other letters when reffuring to lighting? what is the best means of heat and lighting for my baby girl? sorry for the long post im just overjoyed any help would be great.

They don't need an undertank heater...they like their heat from above. Make sure she has a basking spot between 100-115 and a cool side 75-85. A uvb bulb is usually a strip light type bulb and is essential. The best ones are Repti-Sun 5.0 and the new 10.0. They're are also new Mystic bulbs out now that are supposed to be really good, I just bought one at www.bigappleherp.com. There's also Mercury Vapor bulbs which produce both heat and uvb, but I just like the strip lights better. Make sure the crickets are no bigger than the space between her eyes...what kind of substrate is she on? I usually just lurk around here, but I feel like being a little more active...so if you have any questions, just ask. Good luck with your new little girl! I just bought a new baby too, she's a Chris Allen Red/Orange x Flaming Orange Tiger. My big boy, Gordo keeps head bobbing at her from his tank, lol. I'll post pics when I get some...hope you do too. See ya.
