Ventral Patterns

kingaz Apr 21, 2005 12:31 AM

I have 2 leonis phase thayeri with orange striped ventrals like this one, and I also have leonis phase animals with spotted and checkered ventrals. What is everyone elses experience with ventral patterns? Are striped ventrals common?

Hey Greg...

Not that I am a thayeri authority in any sense, but from what I have seen over the past few years, striped ventrals in leonis thayeri are somewhat common and it appears in varying dergees. Many of my leonis are striped on the ventral. This female of yours however is at the upper end of the scale and with all that color in there... wowser! I have also seen a good shot of her dorsal before and she is a real beauty for an F1!

I don't know how common that striped ventral pattern is, but it's incredible looking. Great thayeri!

Great looking Thayeri....
I have noticed striped ventrals on my reduced black thayeri and some other leonis phase thayeri as well, but not quite distinct as that one. My milksnake phase thayeri have checkered bellies usually but so do some of my leonis phase.
Your snake has a nice "wild" look to it....It looks kinda olive in color....Very nice indeed.

If there were a contest to best best ventral patterns on a thayeri or mexicana subspcies, your thayeri just might win!

I have noticed that the black is washed out and nearly absent on the ventral as well.....Next year I am breeding her to her brother that has some reduced black but not as good as this girl. He also has another couple sisters to breed to....Man I can't wait till next year and this year's breedings just got started for most folks.

John,
Great ventral patterns, I liked them both.
Impulsively, before I typed this message I went to my mexicanas had to pull them out and check the ventrals. Not as cool as those two John or the one above. Coolest vental pattern I have in my collection is an abberent Calking with all black ventrals the whole length of the body, it's a great contrast to the abberent black and white body patterns.
