Traveling an Iguana

svinarsk Apr 21, 2005 01:50 AM

Hey Yall,

Maybe some of you remember me from earlier posts a while back. My ig, Miles, is doing really well and eating like a cow every day. One problem is he is living in Illinois and I moved to sunny California and now finally have his setup ready to bring him across the country and to his new home. He is about 1.5 years old now and very happy where he is. My only concern is that he has not been handled for months and might be very territorial, as my well trained iguana caretakers, my parents, told me. My parents have always been animal lovers and caretakers and have a nice home to take care of him while i was adjusting myself here in my new territory. I miss my Ig and want him here, home, with me. He is going to love the sun.

But anyways, i dont know how to get him over here... I know the luggage department is far too cold and will freeze him to death and the cabin pressure on board a plane might be too much for him as well. In a perfect world id want him sent in a seperate battery powered enclosure that has both heat pads and heat lights and fresh water. But i doubt i can find that. Does anyone have any ideas or experiences with shipping or traveling with Iguanas long distance? I love him and i hope he can come to me safely.

Much love,
-Philippe and Miles

Fly there, rent a car, and drive him back to your house. Use a DC-AC power converter plugged into the cigarette lighter to run a human heating pad in his cage.

Have your parents inquire with local reptile pet shops. You can probably pay one of them to properly package and ship him for you.

Well i traveled with my igs twice but not for long distances. From Indonesia to Malaysia it took me a two hours flight and from Malaysia to India a six hours flight. In both cases the airplanes had a separated compartment for pets with a 80 F temperature. My igs arrived safe and happy but they took around 2 months to adjust to India. I needed to hand feed them for 2 long months!
