Yes they do show a lot of pattern, but I think that you see that in Black Rats from west of the Appalachian Mountains. The ones that I see on the East Coast show much less pattern. From the pictures that I see posted, this is normal.

she is darker than this, as the camera flash has washed her out. But she does have the reds. Her and the male both are tinted with lots of reds between the scales on the lower portion of their sides.
