female roaming the cage floor.

dan-binderup Apr 21, 2005 03:56 AM

Hey.
Is it normal for a female panther to roam the cage floor. she is a super animal that eat and drinks like mad. she is about 9-10 month old. I am sure there´s nothing wrong with her but just wants to be sure.
here´s i pic of her on the floor.

best regards

She looks really dark...is this her normal coloration? Or just stressed out cause you're taking the picture? Is she searching alot...meaning that she'll roam the entire cage, go up and down, then down again and search the entire bottom...is she trying to dig? Just wondering cause she might have developed eggs already...just a precaution to keep in mind.

Hey. once again thanks for the fast reply.
no she isn´t going from top to bottom all the time. and no she isn´t that dark all the time, the pic. was taking in the morning so that might explain her dark coloration. should I interduce her to a male or should I wait a couple of month.
as mentioned earlier she is a really top noth chameleon. I really don´t want to rush her in to anything that she isn´t ready to (breeding).
but let me know what you think.
once again thanks.
ps. she i about 10 month old or so.
Best regards

Hi Dan, you can try to introduce her if you want or wait 1-2 more months...if she's not ready yet, she will let the male know for sure! By the way, how is your female veiled doing? Is she receptive yet to your male? Hope it all goes well!

Hey, my male panther did the same thing....I realized his cage was too hot and changed his 100 watt bulb to a 75....solved the problem....

From the thread right above this one. He makes really nice screen cages but I don't know if he ships out of the USA.

Many chameleons will roam around the cage floor from time to time.
Every time I see a female that is old enough to lay eggs doing it,
it makes me wonder if she's looking for a spot to lay them.

All of my egglaying females have been provided with a place to
dig once they are close to sexual maturity. Its IMPORTANT that
they have a place to lay eggs in, even infertile ones so that
they won't become eggbound. So that a large part of the cage is
not taken up with a container, I use a container
big enough that the chameleon can fit into it when its empty with
a little room to spare. I fill the container with washed playsand
about 2 thirds full...and when she starts to dig with intent, I
move the female to a 65 litre rubbermaid type container or a
trash can that has been modified for egglaying.

I never breed my female panther chameleons until they are over
one year of age. I want to be sure that they are done growing
their own bones before they start laying fertile eggs. They may
lay infertile eggs before that time but it should be easier on
them than laying fertile ones IMHO.

Hope this helps!

Dan:
It's a bit difficult to tell, but is this an all glass enclosure? Maybe it's just the angle of the picture, but it looks like you have her in a glass aquarium.
Also, about the silver bowl seen in the background. What is its purpose? Food, water, or a catchbin for excess water?
I'm thinking that the setup might have something to do with the reason it's roaming on the floor. Perhaps it's seeing its reflection on the glass, stressing itself out. You can see the bowl's reflection on the left side of the picture. Maybe if the bowl is a water catch, your chameleon might be going there for water or for food if it's being used for feeding.
Personally, I wouldn't reccommend using an all glass enclosure, much better to use all screen. I did notice that the advertisements from the newspaper on the floor are written in a foreign (Scandanavian maybe?) language. Are you in Europe and using an all glass enclosure to keep your cham's habitat more tropical?
Just my thoughts.

Hey.
yes the cage is glas. på the top of the cage and some of the sides are mesh. the all mesh cages are not very easy to come by here in Denmark, but I will try to get one for my next cage, the humidity isn´t really a problem for my because the ambient room humidity is pretty high due to my other reptiles needs. (chondros)when you spray 8 cages twice a day the humidity will be somewhat high. I think that I am going to wait introducing my female, I am not looking to take any chances. does anyone have pic. of what a recptive panther female looks like? and maybe something about a proper size for breding?
does anyone know were to get good all mesh cages here in europe?

about my female veiled. she isn´t doing all that well, her eyes are a little sunken in and she is not eating that much anymore. I gave her a shower today and that seemed to help a bit. also her eyes looks kinda wet! if anyone know these symtoms please share. she was doing really well for the first couple of weeks. and by the way I haven´t been stressing her out by introducing her to the male every now and then.

Hope this wasn´t to much. hope to hear from you all.
thanks
heres a updated pic. of the panther male.

Hey Dan, yeah you really should consider getting an all screen cage...don't know where to get one in Europe though. None of the reptile online supply stores will ship overseas???? I think even on Ebay you can get all screen cages and they will ship overseas. Check that out.

About your female veiled...are you providing enough water? Sounds like she's dehyrated...

Try Eric Adrignola, From the thread right above this one. He makes really nice screen cages but I don't know if he ships out of the USA.
UPS delivers to Europe but it may not be cost effective or maybe takes too long.

tanks tend to amplify temps int he cage, sounds like she is too hot that may be why she is going to the bottom int he opposit side of the cage she is trying to thermal regulate, If a screened cage is not a option i would suggest a larger High tank this will alow for cooler areas so she can regulate her temps. this may be the same issue that your female veild is having as well with the tems, as for the eye if she has fluid or mucas comming out of the eye i would make sure she is getting a few long mistings and if it is still present id suspect a infection.

just some thoughts
