I really like cypress mulch. I think it looks nice and Grimlock seems to like it. I have a pretty thick layer of it in his cage so he can dig and hide underneath it. He's never had any problems from the small amount he ingests occasionally while eating. Proexotics has a sand/soil/vermiculite mix that is supposed to work really well too. If you go to there web site it tells you how to make it.

Wood chips are for flowerbeds and playgrounds, carpets are for floors and porches, newspapers are for reading, paper toells are for cleaning messes, sand is for sandboxes, and potting soil is for flower pots. DIRT is what works and what your monitor wants. Ive tried temporary amounts of paper, carpets, etc with one result problems and unhappy monitors even in short periods of time. I end up using it with good results. I use top soil from the woods nearby mixed with creek bank soil that all sifted, packed in about a foot plus deep and moistened.
