Weighed him

uromagnus Apr 21, 2005 10:11 AM

The little fatty is 61 grams. He handled it very well and did not even squirm when I picked him up... so I guess we are still friends since he lets me bring my hand up to him w/o reacting.

the weight differences in uros just amaze me. when i first got hugo, a mali, he fit into my hand like the picture you posted below but he was 86 grams and a little underweight. your guy is only 61 grams and is nice and chubby

And Scuttlebutt, who's the same species as Luca and roughly the same age was only 37g as of yesterday (up from 26g when I got him).

I was sure the scale said 61g this morning so I just weighed him again. He is 60g right now (OMG...he did take a big poop today!) He was just stretched out on his basking site so I measured him at 7.5-8"long. He is too interested in the tape measure to stay still for me though. How does that compare to Scuttlebutt?

Well, that does make sense - near as I could figure (tape measures are just too interesting, aren't they?) Scuttlebutt's just over 6" long.

Could the difference be that a Mali will be larger when full grown so the weight at the same age could be higher? How do you know what the proper weight is for a Uro at a given age?

i don't know the proper weights in terms of ranges. i just know his tail wasn't fat and the vet said he was underweight i am sure the eventual size difference has something to do with it. do mali's have denser bones or something?

If you go to Doug Dix's site and compare the species pictures, you'll notice that Malis have a much shorter tail relative to their bodies as compared to Ornates. A Mali the same overall length as an Ornate will have more body and less tail - hence, more weight (assuming healthy critters!).

oh wow, they do have little stub tails don't they? i have only ever had mali's so i have never had anything to compare it to. i just barely measured hugo and he was between 9.5-10 inches and i know he is well beyond 86 grams now. more like 186. his tail is only 4 inches of that helga is a little over 12 inches and 320ish grams
