How soon after hatching do you sex them?

boidkeeper Jul 10, 2003 07:37 PM

I'm going to pop them just not sure if I should wait until after their first shed or not?
Thanks,
Trevor

Hello. Those are some cute babies you have there. Ok, now I could be wrong about this, but from what I have read on the forum and what my friend at the breeders told me, they dont usually "Sex Prob" them until they are 24 inches long, now for tail sexing I think you have to wait till they are a yearling or sub adult to get accurate results. As I said, I could be wrong and if I am, then please someone correct me.

Many different hatchling snakes can be sexed by rolling your thumb up the base of the tail towards the vent exposing the hemipens of the male. I'm just not sure if it needs to be done before or after their first shed.
Thanks,
Trevor

Exposing the hemipenes through the use of slight upward pressure on the tail base is known as "popping". If hemipenes appear, it is a male, if not it is a female. The younger the snake, the easier it will be. I've never heard that you must wait for a shed to sex a snake using this method. However, popping is a very delicate procedure and should only be done by someone with some experience. If done incorrectly, you risk seriously injuring the snake. Those are nice looking corns. Good luck.

since it takes a week or two anyway, it gives them time for their backbone to get stronger. It really has nothing to do with the actual shed. In my opinion, its a good practice to wait. Thanks
