how big before using sand/bird seed?

I've got my little mali on shelf liner right now but i can't wait to put him on sand or birdseed (haven't decided which way to go yet),,, how big should he be before i do this? oh, he's approx 6 inches now, thanks, L

I haven't seen much on specific size, but the breeder I went with said 6 months to a year for an Egyptian (generally bigger than Malis). I plan on extending it to the full year just to be on the safe side. I think it really depends on your comfort level, and general health of the Uro. The idea being that you wait until thier digestive system is big enough to handle some sand or dirt particles (I believe).

Thanks for the reply, i was beginning to think that i somehow asked the wrong question here. He's still a little guy,,, only about 6-7",,, eats pretty good and seems happy.. but i think he'd be happier in sand or bird seed,,, i'm just not sure i'm comfortable with him on that yet. I am going to keep Luca on newspaper until Sept when he will be a year old. This is the advice given in the care sheet info from the breeder. I think he (and myself for sure) would be happier on sand but am doing what is best for his health as I do not want any impactation probs.
