Housing twogether question

Fleck Apr 21, 2005 03:48 PM

Hello
Last year at a herp show I bought a male albino garter. Its my first garter and I now regret not buying a female to.
I housed him in a 10 gallon as a baby and now he lives in a 30 gallon long.
I intend to buy a female this year. If I buy a baby will house her in the 10 untill big enough to be housed with him in the 30 or just might buy a "teenager" if I find one at coming herp show.
My question is . Is it possible to introduce two garters like this into same enclosure?
I would like to house an albino pair together if safe to do so will ofcourse supervise the feeding .
Thanks
Fleck

People can, and do, house snakes together. In many cases, they do just fine. That said: Despite what many will tell you, it is always best to give each snake its own cage. The list of reasons is extensive, but one snake per cage is your best bet.

If you DO choose to house them together...Don't just closely supervise feedings...Feed each snake in its own container, returning them to the main tank after eating. Also, with two snakes living together you should always be on the lookout for signs of general stress...Refusal to eat, regurge etc and be ready to give them each their own cage if one seems to be doing poorly.

I have 13 snakes in 12 cages. I have a 55 gallon tank housing two female corns of the same general size. Both are doing great.
I had both snakes for quite some time before putting them together. I have also started baby snakes in the same cage, but always wound up giving each its own tank after a short while. My two garters lived together as juvies...No longer. Back then, I tried to feed them in the same cage (closely supervising them, of course). It was, to say the least, "interesting". Duffy

As stated above, I did for awhile when mine were juveniles. They did OK, just fine actually. As I learned more on the topic I made the decision to give them each their own cage. As I said, it CAN be done. Just understand that it is not the best possible scenario, and be prepared to change tactics if trouble arises. Good luck. Those albino garters are real beauties. :D
