Northern Ringneck care

ohiorabbit Apr 21, 2005 06:41 PM

I caught a ringneck crossing a local bike trail last night and was hoping to keep it, at least for a while. It's about 8" long (maybe a little more. I've temporarily placed it in a 1 gallon "critter keeper" with paper towels, a water dish, and some stacked mussel shells to hide under. I've been sprinkling lightly with water periodically to keep it a little moist (not wet or damp).

From what I've been reading, it sounds like it will need a 10 gallon tank with about 3 inches of loose substrate, plenty of hiding spots (rock pile, branch), and a water dish about 1 inch deep.

I offered it a worm and a slug but it hasn't really shown any interest, though I didn't expect it to so soon.

Please let me know if this sounds in line for the proper care, and if you have any more tips, share them if you can Thanks so much for the help.

I have to disagree with that, right now all of my ringneck snakes, about 10, are all more active than any of my kingsnakes. They will constantly roam out into the open just to see what is going on.

Out of all the snakes that you have kept what type do you find the most active?

HerperHelmz Apr 22, 2005 05:57 AM

Out of everything I have my most active snakes are ringneck snakes or adult eastern garter snakes.

Thanks suprised to hear by your other post ringnecks are so active. I assumed since so small and probably eaten by birds, other snakes, mammals they would be very secretive mostly hiding.

Well, I know you were not talking to me but the most active snake I have ever dealt with is..... The reticulated python. By far!!!

Couldnt the ringneck eat the worm snake?

HerperHelmz Apr 22, 2005 06:01 AM

I'm sure if the ringneck wanted to, it could eat the worm snake, but normally, northern ringneck snakes do not prey on snakes. I have had less than 5 northern ringneck snakes that would take snakes. Those that did were adult females. Some of those would only take specific snakes that were less than 3 weeks old. A small northern ringneck snake(10" or less)would not eat another snake.

Actually northern ringnecks are found linving together with worm snakes and will not ur thinking of the larger regal. and they dont have to have a 10 gallon . but yes it is better, but northerns are secretive and usually hide under stuff in the cage so small critter kippers will work, but the can escape easy so put somethin heavy.

but trust me they will be fine in a small cage. How long is it?
