2 of my collared look like half paralized ....

Icefire Apr 21, 2005 08:22 PM

I got a trio that have 3 different cage.
Heat is okay, substrate was paper towel now It's plain melamine.
I was suspecting the nail getting stuck in the paper but now I see a reel problem.

There have lotsa problem of coordination, look like muscle problem so far (not enought strenght)
they have about 9 months old, were feeding well before but not have almost stopped eating (1-2 prey a weeks max)
poops is okay.

When I try to take the male, it goes spinning like mad without moving much (1-2 inchs max). They have calcium dish, powdered cal/vit on prey, reptisun 5.0 at 8-12 inch...

1 male 1 female look like this...
Any clue?

Sorry to hear about your lizards. It's hard to say what is wrong. Do you have access to natural sunlight? If so, get them out in it. It will help if it's not too late. What type of calcium and vitamins do you use?

UVB bulb older than 6 month must be changed in order for the calcium being properly metabolized !

Natural sun could be a great uvb boost if they lack of it since a long time.

Will(wwwwwells) was asking about vits and calcium because its important that they are "phosphorus free".

Crix already contains a lot of phosphorus !!

I think vits with phosphorus are made for lizards that are vegans, this is clearly not the case for collareds !

While the above are good suggestions, it is premature to think that this is a Calcium/Phosphorus problem. If it is, than UVB will work too slow for efficient treatment, and is more of a long term benefit. Calcium gluconate and Vit.D3 would need to be supplemented if indeed the muscular/neurological problems are related to lack of available calcium.

Bloodwork will ultimately be used to diagnose metabolic bone disease. Since 2 out of 3 animals are affected it suggests that a communal problem of either husbandry, diet or parasites is at fault. This is not conclusive evidence however.

If you don't yet have a herp vet for your collards, I suggest calling around for referals, www.arav.com and/or herpvetconnection.

Good luck
