Incubator Heat...PLEASE HELP!!!

oldskool28 Apr 21, 2005 11:03 PM

My original plan to heat my Incubator isn't working the way I had hoped....I'm just curious to hear , and I'm open to any Ideas on how to successfully heat an Sam Adams ,glass front refrigerater with the dimensions , 68" by 28" by 24" deep . Originally , I was going to put a piece of 12" flexxwatt between 2 ceramic tiles(bottom of incubator) , using a fan circulating device let air flow throughout , but I need a back up heating system....Any ideas would be appreciated . May be I need to run it for a few days to get the right temps , or UP to temp . I figured in a few hours it would be stiffling in there , because it is air tight , going to make a greatIncubator when tweaked , Thanks in advance

You can use a 60 watt light bulb as a back up heat source - its cheap, doesn't take up a lot of space, and works well on a proportional thermostat.

A note of caution. Your fan can generate enough heat to heat the incubator on its own if - if its 120V and 1 amp, that's 120 watts! And the problem is that your fan is not driven by a thermostat. If you find that your incubator overheats, then your fan is the culprit!

I use a Pro heat panel in my Upright freezer style incubator. I also put a glass front in my door so that I could see inside. I do have a friend that uses flexwatt heat tape on 3 sides of the incubator. I think you will have to let the incubator get up to temp to see if it is stable, if it is then you are good to go. If not the use another type of heat, I think helix makes a good heat panel, I have never used one but I will be trying one out soon. Hope this helps. Thanks David
