Brookesia Availability

Chamkeeper Apr 21, 2005 11:36 PM

I've been out of the loop for a while. I would like to get a cham to keep at the office. Are Brookesias available? B. Decaryis preferably, but B. Permatas would be ok if nothing else is around.

Thanks,

Chamkeeper

Virtually no. I have never seen any brooksia for sale. Are they out there? Sure, you would just have to look very hard, and it might take some time to find some. It is possible, but unlikely, as they are being kept in small numbers in captivity, most breeders are keeping the offspring for themselves to build up cb populations. There was a ban of almost all malagasy cham species in 96 I think (Only leaving Pardalis, oustaleti, lateralis (and lateris major), and verrucosus for importation). I'm not sure if this banned brooksia, but i beleive it did, as I have never seen an imported broksia. Good luck.

You will occationally see some of them. Give nick Mole a call(firstchoicereptiles.com) He gets in tons of rhampholeons and I THINK brookesia. I've seen his stuff at the Tampa show, and purchased soem deremensis from him. He takes good care of his animals, especially in comparison to some other dealers in WC chameleons.

YOu can pretty much forget about B.perarmata - 2 years ago, there were hundreds for sale at the Raleigh show for $40 a piece. Now, they ar eon CITES I, and you've got a better chance of importing a Parsonii. Sadly, you've got a better chance of finding C.B. parsonii than C.B. perarmata - they were the COOLEST little things too. Too bad.

I used to have a pair of B. Decaryi. One year neither came out of brumation. Never got any offspring either, it possible they were both females.
