All in a day's "Work"

PHFaust Apr 22, 2005 12:41 AM

Ok, I know I dont post here much. Well this is only my second post on this forum, but I really feel you all will best understand this.

A few days ago I was cleaning my truck out at work on my lunch break. I work in an office. Which means nicer clothing at work. I had on BRAND SPANKING NEW khaki pants and a brown sweater. Not that you care but trust me it is part of the story.

Now I can count on my hands the times I have seen reptiles in the wild up here in Cheese Land. Not many. And each time I turn about 5 years old mentally. This is a fact I am proud of.

So here I am cleaning out my truck and out of the corner of my eye I see movement. Looking over my shoulder I see a lump of brown. Approaching it to see if it is yet another bird that ran into the glass of my company's entry way, I squeal with excitedment. (I am female therefore squealing is acceptable.) ITS A TOAD!!!!! So being the almost 30 year old office worker that is dressed nice I begin chasing the toad. The drawback folks is that I am the type of person that can not walk and chew gum with out falling down. So into the nice flower bed I go. So much for those clean brank spanking new pants. They are now covered in mud. BUT do not dispair! I caught the toad!

Well we have a few folks in the company that have digi cams. So off I go hunting for one of them. I pass the VP (who saw me leave the building 5 mins before) who stops me and asks "Werent you clean a few mins ago?" To which I reply "YEP!" He askes what happened. Rather than answering because I am so happy, excited and easily amused, I Shoot my hands out and show him my quarry. He then asks "What are you doing with that" I inform him that I am looking for the man with the digi cam. Naturally everyone here understands that when you find a wild herp, you photograph it! He then asks why. I inform him that I wish to find out what it is.

With a blank stare and a dead tone he informs me "It is a Toad". I reply "I know that, but what kind. I need to know the species!" Once again the blank stare and dead tone "Isnt there only one kind of toad in the world" (as you can see I do not work with herp minded folks.)

To which I reply (with my full inner 5 year old) "NUH-UH! There are HUNDREDS in the world!"

So in sharing this story I hope I gave you a smile. Anyone have an guess as to what kind of toad this may be? I am going to also post this in the toad forum, but wanted to share the full story here. Here where folks will understand that little excitement you get.

I have attached a few photos. The toad was found in Waukesha WI which is in the South east corner. I am relocating him as my company has a VERY busy semi yard. I do currently have him (had to bring him home for photo) and will be releasing next week after the thaw.

I think you only have one toad species in Wisconsin, and furthermore, it looks like an American Toad.

Much thanks. I did want to be sure as last year I was chasing an ellusive boa constrictor out there. Wanted to actually make sure it was native as we have had a warm snap and well Iguanas do not grow on trees up here but there have been about 10 found over the past week.

I know how you feel. I've brought some herps in the office (usually to transfer them home from the airport) and I've freaked out my fair share of fellow workers.

You made that sound exciting.

Nice story. I wish my wife got excited about herps like that. I'd just take her out to see some mountain kingsnakes and maybe some rosy boas or chuckwallas, and......

Did I mention nice story.
