Mehelya capensis update:

Oxyrhopus Apr 22, 2005 02:13 PM

Well, no one sent a black mamba to feed, so I tried the usual hopper/mouse thing, one live and one dead, and he ate them both as soon as lights were out. Now I need to find a mate for this one. I missed the feeding. I want to see those jaws do their work. By the way, kingsnake.com allowed me to get another screen name other than my wife's so now it Oxyrhopus which is a rear-fanged species from central and south america. They said pick something unique and I figured no one had that name, and I was right.

And by the way, I know I said it before but the pic does not do this snake any justice. See that lavendar/pink color on its sides down its neck area? My camera lightens that up significantly and its actually very pink/lavendar there and this snake is simply something else to behold much less handle. It feel like holding a file, hence the name and you can feel its backbone and its just odd compared to holding a normal snake without this raised backbone thing. And when holding it, it often looks like it gonna bite and I do not want to find out how hard it bites from personal experience. lol.

According to Branch, (Field Guide to the Snakes & Other Reptiles of Southern Africa) Mehelya never bites when captured, but may empty its bowels. I don't like to see the word "never"
used like that, but it sounds like a pretty safe bet the snake won't bite.

Well it also has a wicked scent gland, and on the way home it decided to skunk the bag and it stunk up the family van and my wife yelled at me for it as if it was who passed that bomb. lol.
