Hybrids? Possible...? cresties x gargoyles... has it ever happened?

DN_Chris Apr 22, 2005 10:29 PM

just a thought that occured to me the other day after reading through the 'rhacodactylus' book (by Philippe de
Vosjoli, Frank Fast, and Allen Repashy). It seems that as the book suggests in many places, many people are now keeping their ciliatus & auriculatus together in the same viv. Im just wondering, is there any possibility of breeding occuring between the two species? say if only 1 male and 1 female were present in the viv.. and if so, does anyone know if a hybrid variety would be feasible or viable? has it ever been tried / eggs layed? I dont necessarily condone the whole hybrid thing - thats an argument for another day i think, but i am curious as to whether this could happen - even unintentionally..

on a confined island like new caladonia, the thought occurs that at some point this is likely to have happened at some point in the past..

cheers for any thoughts

Cheers for the reply! very interesting looking animal.

one of the things that got me thinking about hybrids, apart from safety aspects of accidental cross breeding, was tail loss.. as i understand it some of the rhac species (cant remeber which!) can re-grow their tails, i would be interested in seeing whether any hybrids produced can do the same..

also, the looks and personality of a crestie with a gargoyles appetite and crazy paterning could be fantastic i think.

i dont remember reading anything about two serperate Rhacodactylus species being kept together. What is/are the page #(s)???

I rememebr seeing that picture, didnt pay attention to the fact it was a ciliatus x chahoua. I thought it was a really...odd looking ciliatus lmao.

it sure does, i cant give you any specific page numbers as the friend i borrowed the book from has had it back - shes looked up p52 onwards which mentions keeping skinks(!) and millipedes etc with rhac species..
Theres a bunch of other pages that mention the authors successes keeping rhac species together im sure.. my friend has said she will look them up sometime.

I wold definitely be keen to hear any more info relating to rhac. hybrids that anyone has!

couldnt find that either, found housing combos of cresteds & crocodile skinks, cresteds and pink tongued skinks, chahoua and cresteds, chahoua cresteds and pink tongued skinks, and all of the above with giant african millipedes, pages 49-51. i coulda sworn i had read that in there too though. if someone does have the page, post it please.

Lol the phantom pages.. One thing the book definitely doesnt say is that gargoyles and cresties *definitely must not* be kept toegther.. and youd think they would if it was an issue.. but im sure the section im thinking of said about size considerations - gargoyles will attack smaller cresties and vice versa but if the sizes are similar its ok...

pass

On page 50 in the first paragraph it does say that Philippe has successfully kept adult cresties and gargoyles in the same enclosures.
If you also go to Philippe's website (www.giantgeckos.com) and look under the Gargoyle Gecko section it also says there that you CAN keep adult crested geckos and adult gargoyle geckos in larger enclosures.
Hope this helps

Its fantastic - i love the background info and the species history it contains - i love stuff like that, the little details you dont see or hear about otherwise. Its nice to see a book thats not just about "how not to kill your animal" effectively.
