mt paddle tail newt eats Hikari Carnivore sinking pellets. she eats 5-6 of them every 2-3 days out of a terra cotta dish. she does enjoy a worm treat every so often, but the pellets are her main food. they are much more a complete balanced nutrition for her. my california newts only will eat live foods. they pick and nibble at the frozen, but dont take it as readily unless it moves.
also, frozen food is not healtier then pelleted food. frozen foods are 70 % water and mostly protein. they lack calcium and other vitimens and minerals (also veggie matter too) that are essential to any aquatic creature diet. bloodworms especially, i'm severely allergic to them and they have been linked to cause acute bloat in other amphibians if used as a sole source of food. i've got an article on this, linked on my website. tubifex worms are mostly protein as well, and i think of all the worms they have the least nutritional value.
i understand that newts and salamanders can be picky, and will rarely take pelleted food. in this case i would think gutloaded live foods would be a better option. that way you know they are getting the nutrients they NEED, such as calcium which is nonexistant in frozen foods.
gutloaded waxworms and earthworms are a much better choice for picky eaters.
