I kept a newt for a few years, and he ate quite well on a similar product..."newt and salamander bites", try and see if you can get it for a better price from your bpetstore.
As for the frog food, I suspect that that is only for AQUATIC frogs, meaning a toad wouldn tgo for it. When one says aquatic frogs, there are only two species that immedaitley jump to mind- the african dwarf frog and the africal clawed frog. Both of them are bottom feeders, just about any other type of frog you get however, is highly unliklely to take that food, as as most ofther frogs and toads prefer live prey. If the frog you intened on getting is not a dwarf or clawed frog, just feed him calcium dusted crickets.

depending on the type of newt you get, they will eat pelleted foods. my Paddle Tail Newt loves Hikari sinking carnivore pellets, where as my california and oregon newts will only take live wax and earth worms on land, and live blackworms in the water.

there are many species of red-orange bellied newt commonly sold under the name of "fire belly newt". for example, paddle tail newts, chinese firebelly newts, dwarf fire belly newts, chinese warty newts, chinese giant newts all have red-orange blotchy stomaches but require diffrent types of care. make sure you KNOW what you are buying! as paddle tails will attack all other tank mates....

HBH is a frog food. toads will not eat frog food (they are toads). most frogs (except african dwarf and clawed) will only take live foods such as crickets. and i know toads will do the same. live foods only for toads such as worms and crickets. make sure you GUT LOAD and DUST the bugs as well. you must feed the food too! or your toad/frog get deprived of nutrients.

About those pellets, none of my newts have ever eaten them, and that's what the pet store sold us when we first got one. What's best for them is the frozen bloodworm, tubifex worm, and other various frozen worm cubes sold at most petstores in the fish food section in the freezer. Much healthier and newts will eat them more readily.

mt paddle tail newt eats Hikari Carnivore sinking pellets. she eats 5-6 of them every 2-3 days out of a terra cotta dish. she does enjoy a worm treat every so often, but the pellets are her main food. they are much more a complete balanced nutrition for her. my california newts only will eat live foods. they pick and nibble at the frozen, but dont take it as readily unless it moves.

also, frozen food is not healtier then pelleted food. frozen foods are 70 % water and mostly protein. they lack calcium and other vitimens and minerals (also veggie matter too) that are essential to any aquatic creature diet. bloodworms especially, i'm severely allergic to them and they have been linked to cause acute bloat in other amphibians if used as a sole source of food. i've got an article on this, linked on my website. tubifex worms are mostly protein as well, and i think of all the worms they have the least nutritional value.

i understand that newts and salamanders can be picky, and will rarely take pelleted food. in this case i would think gutloaded live foods would be a better option. that way you know they are getting the nutrients they NEED, such as calcium which is nonexistant in frozen foods.

gutloaded waxworms and earthworms are a much better choice for picky eaters.
