UVB lights and attracting females

jeune18 Apr 22, 2005 10:46 PM

this may be a stupid question but can collareds tell the differences between the lights. my lizards live in screen cages and both the girls will hang on the side of the cage where they can get the closest to the UVB light, pretty much right under it but it is within 12 inches of the basking spot. all of them are always climbing on the sides but only the two girls hang in that one spot in their cage. i went back to turn the untimed lights off and ivan is sleeping there. i just wondered if they feel the lights doing something to them and if she is choosing to sleep under the light, should i leave it on for her?

for what it's worth, I had noticed zebra tails, Desert iguanas, chucks, Collards, and several others that I have had do the same thing. All of them would get as close to the UVB luight as possible. I assumed the same as you, that they know they are getting some benefit from the UVB lights. I am currently building an outside enclosure that I can keep them in durring the day so they can get some real sun. It's really amazing what can happen when anything is put in real sun. Even though I use a 10.0 light in my set-up nothing compairs to the real thing, the color that comes out is amazing and they love it! Let me know if you find any scientific reason behind the UVB light thing.

free roamers, KONG and now Chippewa when not basking under the MVB on the floor basking spot or running around the room, jumping on stuff, they will always climb up on someones tank or screened cage to sit on top or crawl beside the uv strip light.

Put your hand on top, feel a little warmth.

PLUS the fact I think desert reptiles LOVE bright light.

Phil-I also have my Solar and fringe-toed outside and the lizards are completely different. The sun brings out a different color phase as well as different feeding antics and inspite pof what I thinkl is a really good reptile set-up inside--the outside sun has somethng it delivers that cannot compare with the best of bulbs and temps. etc. I am looking to build some more enclosures outside as I get a little extra money.......Cheers!!
