beardie cage lighting help please...

joijoi29 Apr 23, 2005 07:24 AM

I am currently building a 4'x2'x2' cage out of melamine with sliding acrylic doors. I have a 36" uvb for it but I'm wondering about my basking light. Is it safe to just put a ceramic fixture attatched to the top? (75watt or 100watt?) also will just these two lights make it bright enough?

TIA
Marilee

It has been my ezperience that it is safe to put a ceramic fixture attached to the top. I have made a umber of cages doing so and never came into any problems. I normally run about a 75 watt bulb but thats for an 18" high cage. Youd prolly have to go with a 100 watt in a 24" high cage. Here one i made, where the lighting is a lil different. It does a good job with keeping temps up and lighting the whole cage.

Almost forgot, that cage is a 4x2x2 and i couldnt figure out how to light it but keep the pull open top like i wanted it. I decided to get an adjustable ceramic fixture and mount it on the back of the cage wall. I really like how it turned out...
