Information on the health of my Corkbark

Mad_1234 Apr 23, 2005 11:15 AM

Well I took my female to the vet yesterday and they said it could be one of three things, 1 a calcium deficiency, 2 a phosphorus overload, or 3 an infection of the kidneys that has not allowed for calcium absorbtion. All of these have the same symtoms as metabolic bone disease. They are doing a blood lab and I should get the results today. I was really impressed by the care of the clinic I went to. I was in there with the doctor for 45 min and she checked every possible thing on her and my female didn't really seem to mind. I had the whole staff in the room there oooing and awwing my corkbark. They started my female on antibiotics. Anyway last night I saw a huge improvement in her. I hand fed her 2 moths which she took eagerly even after all the stress of a 9 hour drive there and back, plus getting handled for about and hour and getting blood drawn. It looks like she is going to be ok, I hope.

Glad to hear she's doing better. The corkbarks are truly amazing. I've got 2.0 giants and getting two females, but the corkbarks are next for sure. Good luck with her Matt.

Hi Matt, Sorry to hear about your girl. It sure was a wake up call for me. I'm glad she at least seems as though she will be ok. I've started paying a lot closer attention to my girls now. It sure is a scary thing.

I just got the blood tests back today. It turns out she has a severe infection. What a false alarm!! She had all the symtoms of metabolic bone disease, loss of appetite, on the ground, and muscle tremors. It at least makes me feel good that I am not resonsible for her illness. Since her treatment yesterday of antibiotics she has made a tremendous recovery, I hope this trend continues. She has a perfect phosphorus level and actually a slightly high calcium level which the vet thought was because she is gravid. Well I sure learned a lot from this primarily how one illness can mimic the other. I'm glad I didn't take treatment into my own hands and after learning all the stuff I did about metabolic bone disease I am definatly change some of my husbandry method even though calcium isn't the problem.
