Here a few snakes I have kept that I think are underated -

Baird's Ratsnake
African Housesnakes
African Molesnakes (Pseudaspis)
Desert (Russian) Sandboa (Eryx miliaris)

These species are hardy, docile, and easy to keep. I don't know why they don't attract much attention other than the fact they aren't brightly colored.
Baird's rats are up and coming. The Molesnakes and sandboa haven't been widely available.

Checkered Gartersnakes are pretty amazing starter snakes as well that aren't often seen in captivity.

They are great little snakes, like a little python but the ease of care of a colubrid. Neat eyes too...

I would have to say that there are a few that come to mind.

1. Black king snake - Very hardy snake that is IMHO very attractive

2. Prairie king snake - same reasons.

3. Great plains rat snake - Same.

4. Kisatchie/Slowinskii corn - Same.

Im a little biased towards the native snakes though!!

As usual, I have to go with the Savu python. They stay under 5', eat like champs, and gradually speckle up from orange to black as they age. Plus they are semi-arboreal, so if you give them a nice perch, you will get lots of good viewing at night.

I have to throw kudos to the Malagasy Speckled Hognose. They can be troublesome feeders, but I have never delt with ANY species of snake with a better disposition. They are just absolute sweethearts.

silenthill Apr 25, 2005 11:55 PM

I'd have to go with Suriname boas.

Sorry, I'd have to say the common garter snake is the most underrated---look how many people get "introduced" to snakes through them(whether at some type of show or simply seeing one in their backyard). A garter snake was the first snake I ever saw(at least that I knew what it was)-and even after pythons ,boas and a rattlesnake I still am fascinated when I see a garter snake going across the yard, or a road.

What about vine snakes (Oxybelis aeneus)???

Totally awesome beasts!!!

Palex134 great question i really got excited when i saw this hopefully this thread will go on for awhile.

I don't own these snakes but would like to see more:
African House snakes
Savu pythons
Soloman Island Ground Boas
Soloman island tree boas

I would love to see a greater emphasis on the smaller boa and pythons it seems like there are more people interested in giants that end up bad choices and a lot of these underated snakes go unnoticed.

I am fairly new to OWNING snakes but have researched them all my life so i am working on making my collection if anyone has any suggestions after reading my signature love to hear them

>>The King of all snakes! The King Cobra Sean

LOL Awesome snakes without a doubt, (would love to see one in person) but out of the ability/logistic range of most keepers.

Though I do think that regular north american pines, gophers garters and racers are unfortunately ignored. Few are pricey or that vividly colored. But the pines and gophers have a nice presence about them that screams "snake!", and the garters and racers are so alert and graceful. Pretty hardy bunch too.

The most underrated of all---Tropidophis. The dwarf boas are some of the coolest snakes that no one keeps.

rearfang Apr 28, 2005 10:45 AM

I keep Trophidophis haitiensis.

Hopefully they will breed this year.

Hi Frank,

I've been really intrigued by the Trophes, but haven't found much information on them out on the net. What temperatures/humidity are you maintaining them at? Are they feeding pretty readily on mice? I keep seeing them offered, but I tell myself to wait for the captive breds to come out (hopefully your's will breed!). What type of treatment did you give them when you received your pair, again assuming they came in wild caught?

Thanks,

Frank,
We should keep in touch. I have 5.3 hatiensis. I think two of my females are gravid right now. Good luck feeding the neonates.
