Took this one today. It's an upland chorus frog. D70, Sigma 180mm, SB800 flash off camera, f/14, 1/100s. Anyone have any tips on how to minimize blown out flash reflections on water surface like you see across the front of this frog's right shoulder? Some sort of filter maybe?

Cheers,
WK

If you want to see some nice macro work, look up some photos by a fellow named Mark Eagles (search on his member name, "krushO" ) on Nikonians, or look up M. Plonsky on Google. Plonsky uses a Canon point-n-shoot and employs a technique called bracketing. The camera actually takes three pictures at once, each with a different focal plane. Plonsky then merges the 3 pictures with a picture editor, creating an image with the entire subject in amazingly sharp focus for its entire depth. WK

Wk,

Not sure maybe give a polarising filter a go?

I have used polarizers when photographing turtles in shallow water to reduce these reflections. I guess it would work with a flash as wel although it may take some trial and error to get the turn of the polarizer correct.

Thanks Scott and Chris. Yes, makes sense that a polarizer might help in this situation. I just had a look at the selection over on B&H. Most range in price from 100 to 500+ dollars. Have either of you had good luck with a particular brand? I would be looking at getting a 52mm and/or 77mm diameter.

The one negative about photography is that there seems to be a never ending list of stuff to buy.

Cheers,
WK
