I/m new and have questions

CodyNolen Apr 24, 2005 12:48 AM

I have been wanting a garter or ribbon for awhile.

Is either of the two more handle-able? Or are all their relative dart crazy? I couldn't find any info on them untill I looked here. I was wanting a snake I could handle from time to time.

What is the basic rule of thumb for enclosre size?

What is a good temp for them? I will buy a dome reflecter.

Any humidity needs? The humidity in my house is always at 60%. (Albama... lol)

I have never kept a snake. I have kept other reptiles though.

My experience with ribbons is limited to the field (and very limited at that), but from what I hear, they're a little more secretive and flighty than garters (IN GENERAL).

There isn't any. My 30" garter is in a 20 gallon "long" tank.

Garters range way up into Canada and also into the deep South. The temp and humidity requirements vary with species. Again, IN GENERAL, comfortable "human" temps (70s F) can work well for many of the species, with a warmer spot provided by a heat source such as an incandescent light bulb in a dome reflector like you mention (mine gets a 60W bulb which is plenty).
