My beardy

gecko_chick Apr 24, 2005 01:00 AM

I think she is calcium deficiant. I had my friend take care of her for like 3 months..SHe had her on gravle so today she seemed constipated. SHe pooped out the damn gravel...Ugh. My baby is about 1 yrs old...and about 16 inches long...My friend and her family had my baby spoiled with mostly meaty food...She's nearly obese. So I'm giving her a good variety of veggies...she wont eat them so I handed her a worm and what does she do gobbles it up. Ugh...I have a dish of calcium powder in her cage she ate some but ate more of her vita sand...UGh...What should I do???

ack! get rid of that vita-sand. if you want your fella housed on sand put em on washed playsand. but because he continues to eat sand, its a good idea to not use it as a substrate. carpet or shelf liner work excellent.
continue to offer the greens daily. a good way to start is to cut down on the feeders. if you feed him 3 times a day with some type of feeder cut it down to two times and bring in the greens. try giving the greens before any feeders otherwise he's most likely not to be interested in the greens. anyhow continue to cut down on the # of insect feedings per day and introduce more greens by each passing week or so. dont forget to dust with calci and mineral!
good thing i got to you before spook did. otherwise you really would had heard it

Now that you brought up my name........ There are so many things wrong with this post that I am really trying to refrain. Any one that cares for these animals and has the intestinal fortitude...please feel free to help this doomed creature.

since your dragon has problems with injesting sand, get rid of sand altogether. Put the dragon on paper towel for now. Once he is eating fine you can try washed play sand if you really want sand.

As your dragon is a year old (I beleive you mentioned that in your earlier post) Feed him insects only once a day. Feed him crickets, silkworms, butterworms or roaches, don't use the mealworms or superworms. Offer greens first thing in the morning and you can put a few silkworms ontop or buried partially underneath, to encourage him to eat the greens.

To help with the impaction problem with the sand, is give him warm soaks so he can get rid of all that sand. Also keep him well hydrated (warm soaks work for that too).

I would advise a trip to the vet, especially since there may be other things wrong with your beardie from his few months of very inadequate care. Also, if you suspect Ca deficiency a vet is your best course of action.

A few things...

1. take him off Vita-sand immediately and replace it with something he cannot eat (Indoor/outdoor carpetting, paper towels, newspaper, non adhesive shelf liner...)

2. Make sure he has a good UVB bulb that is under 6months old.

3. Make sure you are supplementing well
