Feeding questions

spreskitt May 16, 2003 06:49 PM

I have a Garter that is about 18 inches long. I am not sure what type it is but it is yellow and black with a checkered pattern with little tinges of blue that are only visible when it breathes, I think it is a plains Garter. Anyway I was feeding it guppies but recently switched to feeder goldfish. The gold fish look to be about 1 1/2 to 2X the snakes diameter and he is eating them like crazy. I figured 2 a day would be good but today he ate 3 and was looking for more. Any ideas on how much he should eat? can they over eat? Should I be feeding him other
things as well? Is he full grown? any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks.

He's not full grown at 18 inches as they can reach 30 to 36 inches in length. You can vary the type of fish he's eating and give him worms. They like worms. I've had a couple that would even eat small crawfish and small frogs/tadpoles. I feed my garters every three days a dozen fish and half a dozen nightcrawlers and take out what they don't eat after six hours or so (usually just a few fish with the occassional worm thrown in).
