HELP! MY Burm had a bad shed! Need Some Advice

xxcolbyxx Apr 24, 2005 02:34 PM

My Burmese Python just shed yesterday, and it seems like his shed came out in segments all over the cage. He got most of it off, but i see that there are some areas on his upper neck that he didnt' get off, and i guesss his right lens cap didn't shed off with it either. I guess the humidy wasn't high enough, but i misted him on a daily bases. But my Burm commpletely HATES soaking in teh water bowl, so could this also be a problem? What would be the best way to keep his humidy in his cage right to an optimal level, and what's the safest way to remove the shed pieces still on him? Thanks. >_

When my snakes do that, depending how big it is, I place them in a rubbermaid container with holes and some moist paper towl, I place it back in the cage so it still remains warm, and then it sheds right off.

At this point if it is big you will need to soak it, in a tub for awhile, and it will come off.

To prevent it what is the heat and humididty like in the cage? When my burm was in a glass cage thats how she shed, but when I saw her taking it off, I would spray the newspaper and it all came off, but if I did not then I had the same thing. You may have to mist two times a day, instead of one, or place a big thing of moss in a rubbermaid top open that it can lay in, some people use I want to say apsen and that you can spray and it helps hold the moisture, but check first about the asepn its harder to clean as well.

Your burm most likely hates soaking in his water bowl because its cold water, get him in the tub in warm water and keep making sure its warm, ull have to change the water a few times. I garuntee he will like to soak if the water is warm, let him stay in there for an hour or so and if he allows you, rub him while in the tub, if not he'll get it off later.

Thanks for the replies guys, but i currently misted the cage extra times now. But my humidity of my cage is 75, and the temp of his warm spot is 95 farenheit. Is this the optimal level i shoud have my cage at?

Oh, so now it's warm water now? >_< I read on other forums that the warm water is too hot for a burm, and instead likes cool water. If i do soak him in warm water, how WARM is WARM? Say, the temp that would be kinda warm for me would be okay for my snake? That shed piece is really bugging me.

Warm, like lukewarm. Actually a bit more then that, and you have to keep it at temp for as long as you soak him. Something else you might try is a warm wet towel. Lay it over him wet. the weight seems to make them feel secure. Works for my retics.

I tried the wet paper towel, and i even soaked my 3.5 foot long Burm in the warm tub for 30 minutes checking the tempurature. The shed on his neck wont' come off, and what ever piece that i try and peel of for him it feels like i'm ripping his skin off! Are there more ways to remove this thing?!? My word, it seems like the shed is glued onto him =(

Give it another go later today. It'll come off eventually. My five footer has stuck shed on her neck most every shed. Once you get a free edge to git hold of, peel it slowly from the head towards the tail. She might not be still for it, but it will all come off. Just be patient
