Has anyone ever used Kudzu as a foodsource?

briarpatchherps Apr 24, 2005 03:08 PM

There's a vine that blankets the Southern United States that was imported from Asia back in the 1800's. According to the nutritional value information I've found it would be a very healthy food source but if tortoises will eat it or not is a totally different subject. A lot of farmers have used it as a feed source for livestock since its introduction to the US...I was wondering if anyone has used it as tortoise food?

Try it & let us know. I used to feed it to my guinea pigs & they LOVED it. I'd pick the seed pods in the fall & they loved those as well.

BTW, it was brought into the US in the 1930s to control erosion. The flowers look & smell like wisteria & ought to be declared Alabama's state flower.

I would love to try it but unfortunately I'm not located in the South. Here's a link with full information on the plants introduction, you're correct that it was used very heavily in the 1930s but was in fact introduced in 1876....tomato - tomoto
