requesting general info for a newbie

faerie822 Jul 10, 2003 10:18 PM

im a newbie on the list, sorry if this is on here somewhere already, but i have a problem. i just bought an african side-neck from the pet store, & planned on him living with a few other turtles (box turtle & florida yellow belly) in a tank thats already set up & running. the side-neck is significantly larger than either of the others, but i didnt think it would be too much of a problem...but hes gotten aggressive with the yellow belly already. is this normal? im hoping its just new guy jitters...right now, hes separated from the rest, but its a temporary set-up. any information you can give me would be really appreciated. if i cant get him to behave he might have to go back to the store, but i would rather avoid that. any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance...

Ok well what kind of setup do you have? First off, a box turtle and a slider should not be housed together unless you have an outdoor pond with a signifigant land area. Box turtles are terrestrial, sliders are aquatic. Exotic species like the the one you just bought should not be housed with the sldier either. I would only reccomned keeping turtles that are naturally found together, in the same tank. But even then you can run into problems with agressivness. So basically what im trying to tell you is, I think your over your head. You will need a different enclosure for each turtle, and the boxie should have an outdoor pen. The slider will need at least 100gal tank depending on sex (females can get 12in). And the other guy will get pretty big as well, again I would say a 100gal tank at the least. Well if you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Most Cuora are aquatic to varying degrees...

Check this site and see if you have one of these...

Then we can go from there...
