when to cut the eggs?

jimfmcdonald Apr 24, 2005 09:40 PM

is 60 days the longest you should wait for babies to cut there way out before you cut the eggs your self? or do most of you just wait tell the first one cut its way out? or when is the soonest that would be safe to cut them. not that I have any plans to cut them out to soon! I just want to know all I can. thanks.

...I wait until the first egg pips on its own OR 55 days, whichever comes first, then I do small slits in all the rest...more often than not, even with a decent slit, the baby will start sliting somewhere else, even a few mm's away from your slit...instinct for the baby to use that egg-tooth...sjm

I've often wondered about this. It seems mother nature used a snakes natural ability to move around head first and prefixed a nice sharp egg tooth. Either way, pretty neat.

I've often wondered about this procedure. Why do breeders slit the eggs? Is there a physical need to slit? Health reasons? Or is this just something that anxious breeders do in order to see all the goodies a few days early?

Curious,
Chris

I'm guessing they have probably found a full-term but dead snake or two....that just couldnt break free in time.
