Recent NH reptile expo (pics)...

Antegy Apr 24, 2005 10:33 PM

Hi everyone,

I went to the All New England Reptile Expo in Manchester, NH about a week ago - and I can't say that it was great.

I have to admit, I do like seeing all the different types of animals - but I don't like seeing them under those conditions. Look and judge for yourself how you feel about sights like this:

and

I guess that's their way of making a person want to take the animals and give them a good home?

By the way - I also noticed that there were a couple of displays selling, can you believe this: 'branches'.

Yes, branches, logs, pieces of wood, whatever. And people were paying a good amount of money for these pieces of wood. Now, maybe if a person lived deep in the heart of a big city, where wooded areas are rare; but we were in New Hampshire - and how many people are really all that far from a piece of wood? Just seems a little ridiculous to me. Kinda like buying a "stepper" instead of just using the ones you have at home already...

Its late and I'm tired - just wanted to share a bit with the forum.

Thx,
- Mark
.

Mark Thanks for the pics. Yup, I think the sellers oughta be housed in a box like that for several hours, just to get the feel of things. If I were any one of those snakes I'd be one cranky SOB in a real short time. And per the 'wood', that's for lazy people what gots lottsa money, and nothin' better ta do with it. Sad, ain't it?

Thanks for the pics. Yea those images with the snakes cramped up are pretty bothersome. As for the wood/branches for sale, it's probably the best to buy them. Many of the companies that manufacture these products treat them for mites and parasites. Whereas getting a branch from your local woods most likely has all types of these critters hidden in crevices the naked eye cant even see. Sure you can bake it in your oven but that only works if the branch is tiny. Also, some of these products, like the hollow half logs arent even wood. They are bark from a cork tree so they arent known to harbor wood mites/parasites. Just thought Id shed some light on it.

I know what you mean I bought an 8ft burm from the dealer in you second pic. it was right next to the retic in the pic, they must have put the anacoda in that spot when i took her. thats part of the reason i took her because i was really looking for a male. she was way more cramped than the retic. luckaly she real sweet

yeah I am never happy to see RJ's exotics snakes kept like that, he used to use large sterlite tubs but now he got that horrible display case somewhere and puts 6-8 foot boids in it. The case would be fine for smaller boids or other smaller reptiles.
