problems breeding mealworms

Lacrosseboss18 Apr 25, 2005 12:42 AM

I have been having problems breeding mealworms. I can never sift through the bedding to get to the worms. I have used everything from oat meal, dog food and others. I was wondering what everyone else uses for a set up. How do you all collect the worms, without it taking an hour?

Can you describe your setups?

Thanks
Joseph

i bought mealworms.. dumped 'em in a 5 gallon with oatmeal and milk powder. threw in 3 halfed potatoes, cut side down. make sure hey r in a warm room if u want em to breed faster. every few months i strain it with a plastic strainer, throw out what passes through and add food to what doesnt. dont feed from it for month or so, adding meal worms again about two weeks in to establish a good colony and life cycle. do it correctly and like me you can just reach in and grab a handfull.

good luck

You can try Gerber Baby Cereal. It's really fine and seems to work the best out of everything I've tried. Then, when you throw a potato or carrot in, you should be able to lift it out with tons of worms on it.
